Submit a Manuscript to Celebrate Pub Subbers

“Submit a Manuscript to Celebrate the 3rd Birthday of Pub Subbers” by Joan Y. Edwards

Pub Sub Today

Happy Birthday to You,
Happy Birthday to You,
Happy Birthday Dear Pub Subbers,
Happy Birthday to You!

Today, February 6, 2013 is a great day to celebrate you and your past, present, and future submissions to publishers, editors, agents, critique groups, and contests.

History of Pub Subbers

Three years ago, I thought about these facts. Tara Lazar had Picture Book Idea Month (PiBoIdMo) which is now called Story Storm. Penelope Dullaghan had Illustration Friday. Why not have a special day to submit our work?

December 16, 2009

Thank you to the members of Wordmunchers Writing Group in 2009 for encouraging me with my writing and submitting manuscripts to agents and editors:

Cindy Silver (former Wordmuncher)
Donna Koppelman (former Wordmuncher)
Lara James (former Wordmuncher)
Megan Vance
Ruth Gentry
Samantha Bell

These three people joined Wordmunchers later.
Joy Acey Frelinger
June Phyllis Baker
Margaret Fieland

They also believe in the importance of submitting manuscripts on a regular basis.

On December 16, 2009 I wrote to the members of our Wordmunchers Writing Group:

“It would be helpful to encourage each other to submit something we have written to a publisher each month. I have given life as an excuse that I haven’t done that, however, it’s still a great goal and we could set aside one week as submission week where each of us submits our cover letter, resume, proposal, query letter, etc. for critique and then each of us sends it off on the last Friday of the month….what do you sweet people think of these ideas? Do any of them spark your fancy?”

The Wordmunchers were more than willing to participate in what I called,  “Submission Friday.” We chose January 22, 2010 as the first “Submission Friday.” Since they liked it, I thought others might like it, too.

On January 23, 2010, I thought sharing the idea with SCBWI-Carolinas would be good and the Muse Online Writers Conference Board.  I wanted the day for submission in the title of the group so that we would know everyone was doing it on that day. It would create a vibe for submission through the air on that certain day. Talking with my friend from SCBWI-C, Linda Andersen, I thought PubSub would be good a catchy name. She suggested the third Friday for submitting.  It gives you another week to submit during the month, if you miss it. So I called it PubSub3rd Fri.

On January 24, 2010, I sent a letter to SCBWI-Carolinas and Muse Conference Board about PubSub3rdFri. A few people liked the idea and said they would like to participate. I thank the members of SCBWI-Carolinas and the members of the Muse Conference Board for supporting PubSub3rdFri.

On January 27, 2010, I sent a letter to Wordmunchers about PubSub3rdFri and PubSub3rdFri went live on my blog saying our first PubSub3rdFri submission day would be February 19, 2010. I asked people to post when they submitted a manuscript to a publisher or agent.

During 2010 I changed include it as PubSubbing when you submit your work for critique and when you enter a contest. Both will lead you to more confidence in yourself and inspire you to keep on going and ultimately help you get to publication.

During 2010 and 2011 I noticed that many people were saying they didn’t like having a special day of the month to submit, they submitted whenever they got ready. Some said they submitted more than once a month. All of these things are good. Some didn’t see why it had to be on the third Friday. It doesn’t, but I still believe you have to have a day set up for your time to submit your work. I thought if I gave PubSub3rdFri a nickname and called it “PubSubbers,” it would be more user friendly. I  kept “PubSub3rdFri” as the formal name and use “PubSubbers” as a nickname because it’s easier to roll off your tongue. Now we just use Pub Subbers!

In February, 2012 I started a yahoo group so PubSubbers could come together to talk and support each other. We celebrate each time a member submits a manuscript. We encourage each other to send work out again when we receive a “No.” We encourage when life gets in the way of writing and submitting.I send out automated reminders for Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, and Week 4. We also have a way to swap manuscripts, proposals, query letters, cover letters for critique. There are 12 members, including me. Here are the names of eight members who gave me permission to list their names. If you click on their names, it will take you to their website or blog:

Gail Delaney
Iris Deurmyer Mangum
Juliana Jones
June Phyllis Baker
Linda Martin Andersen
Megan Vance
Sherry Weaver Smith
Susan Hornbach

We would love to have more members.  If you would like to join a wonderful support group for submitting your manuscripts, email me at the contact address from the left-hand column or pubsubbers-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

I am proud of all the people I know who have submitted more of their work because of Pub Subbers. I’m sure there are many that I don’t know about. It’s all okay. Just remember to celebrate each time you submit your manuscript. Never Give Up.

Since 2010 over 2159 viewers have read one of my Pub Subber posts. The blog links are way below – after my closing signature. The number of viewers is listed after the first 25 blog posts. Some with fewer viewers may have been from the early days of my blog. Check out three of them for ideas to spark you into submitting one of your favorite manuscripts today. Submit this month as a gift to yourself. To submit a manuscript is the most wonderful gift you, a writer, can give yourself.  It shows three things: confidence, guts, and a belief in yourself.  Each time you submit, you’ll gain more experience, more skills, and guide yourself to publication.

Thank you for reading my blog. I appreciate your presence here.
