“Spruce Goose Helped in the Design of Big Jets Today” by Joan Y. Edwards

This huge amphibious plane was built by Howard Hughes in the 1940’s. It was meant to carry troops, vehicles, and supplies. However, when the World War II was over there was no need for it. Therefore, the Spruce Goose (Hercules) took three test taxis on the water, and flew once with McNamara a news reporter and others.
I bought the DVD entitled Howard Hughes and His Flying Boat. In it when McNamara was questioning Hughes during the third taxi test, he mentioned the government. At that Hughes surprised everyone on board by flying it for a mile at an altitude of about 70 feet. They made a few changes to the design. Another prototype was never built. However, many of the designs and implements used in the Spruce Goose helped people design big jets better. This fact has not been broadly acknowledged. Thank you to all who helped build this magnificent flying boat. Thank you to all who are preserving it in the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum.
A poignant movie depicting the life of Howard Hughes is the Aviator. I recommend that you watch this movie. It won five academy awards. It starred Leonardo DiCaprio. It was written by John Logan.
