Healing Sounds

“Healing Sounds” by Joan Y. Edwards.

Thanks for being here. I wish I could see you. I especially wish I could hear your voice.

I wrote this blog post today in honor and in memory of my sister, Judith Carolyn Meyer Thomson, who died on March 25, 2012.  She was a year and a half older than me. She and her husband, Lloyd studied about the healing of sounds with Jonathan Goldman http://www.healingsounds.com/. She studied the healing ways of the American Indians who live in the states of Oregon and Washington. This included learning how they made drums and used their sounds for healing. She taught many people across the United States how to make drums and how to use drumming to heal. Michael Drake gave special thanks to her in the acknowledgments of his book, The Shamanic Drum: A Guide To Sacred Drumming: “Special Thanks to: Judith Thomson, whose devotion to ‘the way of the drum’ has been a wellspring of inspiration for me.”

Judith C. Thomson with a drum she made listening for the sacred sounds of healing.

In February 2012 I gave a workshop to the Savvy Wordsmith’s Writing Group in Fort Mill, SC. I did it using the help of Judith’s information about the healing powers of sound. In July 2010 she asked me to create a website about my positive thinking theories. She asked me about that again in February when I called her and told her I was doing the workshop on the healing powers of sound. I told her that I have a website and a blog that I believe does that. I told her my dream is to do in person workshops to share what I’ve learned. I’ve been doing that on a small scale with Savvy Wordsmiths and doing Online Workshops.  My plan is to create video lessons and offer them for sale on CDs, DVDs, and ebooks, and paperbacks.

Drum made from deerskin. Drumstick made from Aspen tree.

Drum and drum stick

This drum my sister, Judith C. Thomson, her husband, Lloyd, and I made. This drum had 4 sections, 16 parts - similar to our brains.

The inside of an Indian Drum has 4 parts and 16 sections to mimic the brain. The top left is the Male. The top right is the female. The bottom left is the God Source – Fires the electricity for each cell every moment we live. The bottom right – I’m clueless.

Join with others who are positive minded. Find the healing sounds within you and surround yourself with healing sounds. God is within you. God is around you. God will help you. Ask and you shall receive. Believe and it will be granted to you.

Although this sound is not something that we hear with our ears, it’s something we definitely understand. Sort of like radio waves that come into a radio and come through the speaker. Or television waves that come through the air and show up on the television.

  • Your emotions are the signs of your thoughts. Change your emotions. This will change your thoughts.

  • Get rid of the negative or limiting thoughts and beliefs. Reinforce the positive life-giving beliefs.

  • Change your thoughts, it’ll change your emotions. Your emotions send signals to your brain. The brain sends its signals to the rest of your body through your spinal cord.

The heart was the first organ in your body that worked. When your heart beat, it sent information to the brain. That is incredible to me.  They don’t know what it is that causes the heart to beat, but it does. I believe it is God that causes it to beat.2.Energy comes to you according to the energy you let go of. What you sow you shall reap. What goes around, comes around.

I think it’s interesting that many fine musicians suffered from deafness. Ludwig van Beethoven was deaf. Beethoven started going deaf from about age 27 and was profoundly deaf by 45.
Johnny Ray had a hearing loss. It goes along with the knowledge that music makes vibrations…that can be sensed in different ways. They still wrote wonderful music although they couldn’t technically hear it.

Om -AUM sound (home without the h) inhale – exhale chanting om sound. Visualize your dreams coming true at the end of the breath. Creation of new. It is the name of God. Body speech and Mind: http://www.ehow.com/how_4494940_chant-om-properly.html

Ah sound of love – Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (pronounced like Allah and Buddha:
http://www.healingsounds.com/articles/shifting-frequencies-9.asp  Amen, Ahhh, love and compassion, last breath

Hu sound – whooo- youuuuu buzzing sound with lips almost closed. God realization and enlightenment – name of God -energy for balance and clearing

There are others. I don’t know what they are.

  • Every person has his own healing sound(s). My sister, Judith, said it’s the sound of our own thoughts.

I believe there are also sounds that we can sing or hear and they immediately calm us and give us peace. Perhaps it’s because the music helps us change our thoughts and emotions, too.
“Flip Flap Floodle” song is a healing sound for me: http://www.joanyedwards.com/FlipFlapFloodlesSong.wav. “Amen,” the song from the movie, Lilies of the Field is another of my favorites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rn6w255CGkkm

A variety of music heals people in the Savvy Wordsmiths writing group:

  1. Pachelbel’s Canon in D http://pianobrothers.com/Music/ADayToRemember/canonind.asp
  2. “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from favorite movie – Wizard of Oz http://same-melody.com/israel-kamakawiwoole-somewhere-over-the-rainbow/
  3. “Cold Wind Blows” by Eminem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMeeIvOjIp4&feature=related
  4. “Somewhere over the Rainbow”  LOVE the version by Anna Beaumont.
  5. “When You Wish Upon a Star” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnqgROXTSFw
  6.  “You’re Still The One” sung by Shania Twain  http://www.last.fm/music/Shania+Twain/_/You%27re+Still+The+One
  7. “Moonlight Sonata” by Beethoven (also known as Piano Sonata No. 14 in C# minor). http://1stpiano.com/beethoven-moonlight-sonata/
  • Put life-giving thoughts into your subconscious mind, say and think:

  1. I am thankful for what I have.
  2. I am excited and happy that I’m going to receive what I desire.
  3. Ask and I shall receive.
  4. I plant what I desire in my heart.
  5. I write down what I want as if I already have it.
  6. I visualize what I want as if I already have it.
  7. I sense that I already have it.
  8. I hear the sounds that prove that I already am and have what I desire.  I am…I have…
  9. Change the “I wants” to:

I am
I have
I am excited, happy, and grateful that I earn more than 200,000 before December 31, 2012.
I am grateful, happy, and excited that I have more than one book on the New York best seller list by December 31, 2015.
I am grateful, happy, and excited that I am healthy.

  • Make a tape of you saying affirmations about yourself and then repeat them along with the tape.

  • If your self-confidence is sagging in an area, write out seven life-giving affirmations, to help reach your goal.

Say them to yourself every morning. Say them to yourself every evening. Write your goal on one side of a 3×5 inch card. On the other write, “Ask and you shall receive. Believe and it shall be granted unto you.” In his book, The Strangest Secret, Earl Nightingale says to remember “You become what you think about.”

When you get a negative or life taking away voice in your head, or hear one coming from outside your body – transform this into a life-giving saying. That’s your job to keep yourself living in a healthy world is to transform – change these thoughts. You can’t control what comes into your mind. You can transform the ones you notice. Put a prayer on them. That is change them to a life-giving thought to send to your brain from your heart.

Emoto took water and froze it. Then he put the frozen crystals of water under a microscope. They formed beautiful crystal shapes. Then, he took polluted water and did the same thing. The polluted water did not form a pretty crystal formation. It looked muddy and not at all like a crystal. Then he prayed over the polluted water. Said good things about it, froze it, and put the crystals of water under the microscope. They were less brown and more like a regular crystal. Prayer made a difference. Each prayer or good thought helped the water heal and form a more perfect crystal shape.

The human body is approximately 75% water. The same would be true of your body when you say good things to it. It will heal. Consequently, if you say bad things or other people project negative thoughts or words, it will have a negative effect on the body, mind, and spirit. Put a new pattern of sound over the old words and the old vibrations. The water changes. You can change, too.

For instance, when my husband, Carl, was a little boy, he heard the words, “You are slow. What takes you so long? You are too slow.”

He took those words as being authoritative…the truth. He took these words as a true statement. He became what he was told.  His body received these words and made them come true.  His body, mind, and spirit used all the energy available to keep these words true…to keep the old beliefs active, even though they were not life-giving. If you think you’re in lack, if you think you don’t have enough – everything starts shutting down. Change those negative, untrue statements that run through your mind, body, and spirit. Carl changed what the voices were saying to him. He continues to let go of these negative connotations and beliefs about himself. You can change the limiting beliefs within you. You can change them now. You can transform them. I believe in you.

Join with others who are positive minded. Find the healing sounds within you and surround yourself with healing sounds. God is within you. God is around you. God will help you. Ask and you shall receive. Believe and it will be granted to you.

  1. Much love given and received. Your Sister – Janet

    • Dear Janet,
Thanks for writing. Thanks for sharing the picture of Judith with her drum. You are a gift from God. Unwrap a new talent each day! I love you.

      Celebrate you today!

  2. Joan, I am so very sorry to hear of your sister’s passing. Please accept my sincere wishes of healing, and love to you and your whole family especially during this time…. Judith was and still is a very remarkable woman! I know you know she is only a whisper away!!!

Your blog is very moving and I will enjoy reading all of it and looking into all of the wonderful information and sites for healing that you have put in it… Your sincerity is greatly appreciated all the time!
    Blessings, Love and Light,
    JoAnna

    • Dear JoAnna,
Thank you writing. Thank you for your sympathy, love, and wishes for healing for me and my whole family. You are right, Judith was and still is a very remarkable woman who is only a whisper away. She loved for people to experience things for themselves. She felt that experience was the best teacher. She made me laugh. I wanted to see the Pacific Ocean and put my feet in it. I had been to the Atlantic, but not the Pacific. She took me there. I thought it odd that she and her husband, Lloyd, didn’t have on their swimming gear. When I put my feet in the Pacific, my toes almost froze off. Icicles formed on my elbows. It was so funny. I said, “Why didn’t you tell me it was cold?” Her answer was: “I wanted you to experience it for yourself.”
As far as healing, each of us has to find what works for us. I tried to introduce you to some. Then you can choose the ones that make sense for you.
May you find the healing you need!
      Celebrate you!
You are a gift to the world opened a little each day!

  5. I’m so sorry you have lost the physical presence of your sister. She sounds like a magnificent woman to have known. (It runs in the family)

Perhaps that bottom right portion of the drum is for our Journey with the drum after it has crossed our Path.

Or perhaps for the Spirits of our loved ones to communicate with us.

    It’s a Mystery.

    • Dear Widdershins,
Thank you for your sympathy and explanation of what might be the bottom right portion of the drum….our journey with the drum after it has crossed our Path or perhaps tor the Spirits of our loved ones to communicate with us. Indeed it is a mystery. It is a good feeling to know that those who died from their physical bodies live forever in spirit.
Celebrate you and your loved ones, today.
      Never Give Up

  6. Joan,

I am sorry for your loss, but I so thankful that you went out to visit Judith last year and got a chance to spend time with her.

This blog post is a terrific tribute to Judith and her search for healing sounds and peace. I enjoyed the photos and the explanations. Thank you.

The celebration of Judith’s life will be yet another special event I know you look forward to exeriencing, just like the Pacific Ocean.

    • Dear Linda,
Thank you for your sympathy, prayers, and friendship. I am ever so grateful that I got to visit Judith in 2010. She listened and watched the Hale Dwoskin’s DVDs about the Sedona Method of releasing emotions. She found it to be beneficial. She told me she was going to do a drumming session in California last year. Yes, the Celebration of Judith’s life in June will be a wonderful event to pay tribute to Judith and everything she was to her family and others.
      Celebrate you today.
      Never Give Up!

  7. Dear Joan,

Your sister is absolutely adorable, just like you. She seems amazing.
This is a wonderful tribute to her and I’m so glad you posted a picture.
I’m so sorry for your sudden loss. She will live in the hearts of the many, many people she touched. Love, Karen

    • Dear Karen,
Thank you for writing. It’s good to hear from you. Thank you for the compliment about my sister and me. I’m glad you think this blog post is a wonderful tribute to her. My younger sister, Janet Susan Meyer, sent it to me so I could insert it in the blog. I didn’t have any pictures of her with her drum. I was glad that I was one of the many she helped make a drum. She taught me many of the Indian ways of wisdom. I soaked it all in like a big sponge. When you learn healing ideas, you probably do the same thing. The more you learn, the more you want to learn. Celebrate you and your gift of laughter and caring for others!

  8. Hello, I and so sad to hear of Judiths passing. She was a teacher of mine, and one who really affected my heart. She stood before me and said “you have no lack” and she repeated this to me until my heart heard it. 2 years back we had a drum making , and she helped me with my drum, and looked at me said you have a song sing it. I love her and will miss her dearly. God bless, Jackie Shein

    • Also, Grandmother Judiths laughter was by far the most amazing sound, she changed people. When she sang to my soul, I was healed of hurts I had long forgotten. I am sobbing, she was sooo instrumental in my growth.

      • Dear Jackie,
I loved to hear Judith laugh, too. Laughter is indeed healing. I am praying for you and for more healing and joy in being you! It brings me great joy to learn about the people who loved Judith and heard her song.
Sing a new song unto the Lord!
For you are a child of God.

        Never Give Up
        Joan Y. Edwards

    • Dear Jackie,
Thank you for writing. I’m very glad that you met my sister, Judith. It is great that she told you that you have no lack. Indeed God gives you an abundance of what you need. All you have to do is ask and then expect it to come with unwavering faith. Indeed you do have a song. Sing it now. Sing it outside so that the birds and the other animals can hear you. You don’t have to sing it loud (unless you just want to do that). Her spirit can hear you now. I’m glad you were able to make a drum. Play it and sing. All creation will love to hear it.
Judith loved sharing her drumming and drum making skills and wisdom with others. May God bless you. Celebrate you today. You bring something to our earth that no one else can bring.
      Never Give Up
      Joan Y. Edwards

    • Dear Jackie,
It occurred to me that your particular “song” might not be singing. It might be “painting, sewing, building from wood, helping the needy.” Whatever gifts you have, be thankful for them and use them. It is fun.
      Thanks again for writing.

      Never Give Up
